Thunderbirds sign Scott Campbell to a One-Year Contract

Jul 26, 2021

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (July 26, 2021) - The Halifax Thunderbirds today announced they have re-signed veteran defenceman Scott Campbell on a one-year contract.

Campbell, 39, was an assistant captain for the Thunderbirds in 2019-20, his 16th season in the NLL. He played in all 12 games, posting 11 points (3G, 8A), 90 loose balls, and 13 caused turnovers. The Markham, Ontario native was second among Halifax defenders in scoring, and his time on floor (20:37) was the third highest for the entire team.

"Soupy is a guy that you can't replace,” said teammate and co-assistant, Graeme Hossack. “The way he plays and the energy he brings to the locker is like no other. He can bring laughter and calm to any situation.”

Campbell has spent most of his career with the franchise, part of its three league titles from 2012-14, and continues to etch his name in its record books. He is fifth in regular season games played (152), sixth in loose balls (700), and third in caused turnovers (116).

The left-handed alum of Elmira College was selected in the second round (No. 10 overall) of the 2004 NLL Entry Draft by the Minnesota Swarm. After playing for the team in the Swarm’s inaugural season, he spent the next five seasons with the Toronto Rock.

After playing four games for the Boston Blazers in 2010-11, Campbell was acquired by the Rochester Knighthawks and spent most of the next nine seasons with the franchise. He played for the Saskatchewan Rush at the end of the 2018-19 season before signing with the Thunderbirds ahead of the 2019-20 season.

“Soupy has the unique ability to keep the dressing room light with his jokes, and serious with his knowledge and compete level,” said Thunderbirds captain, Cody Jamieson. “He is the ultimate teammate, and I’m thrilled he is back with us!”

Campbell has played in 229 regular season games. He has 138 points (54G, 84A), 1017 loose balls, and 125 caused turnovers. Through 22 postseason contests, Campbell has 16 points (2G, 14A), 93 loose balls, and seven caused turnovers.

“The plan is to pick up where the team left off before the start of the pandemic and put ourselves in the position to contend for a championship, said the veteran defenseman. “We have gotten deeper in this extended off season through the draft, trades and free agents. I’m looking forward to see how that depth translates onto the floor.”
